I don't think it's very nice of you to make us wait so long for this episode and this reunion but I do appreciate that you're coming back on my birthday, so it's fine.
ReplyDeleteI defended the breakup when it happened but I really don't like how it's resolved here. It makes this whole mini arc seem kind of pointless and unnecessary. None of the problems Luke and Lorelai had that probably played a part in the breakup are resolved or even really acknowledged. The only thing different now is that Emily isn't actively working against them anymore. And what does this say about Luke and his character? He just does everthing Emily tells him to do? I'm glad they're back together but the way it's done here feels a little ridiculous.
I think Lane's story here is also really interesting but I don't like the execution. She just blurts out that she can't have sex before marriage and that's presented as a fact that Lane has no choice in or control over, even though she obviously doesn't like it. In theory this is a really interesting concept, that this is the one thing from her upbringing and her mother's rules that stuck and it would be cool if they had actually explored it more than they do here. Which makes me realize that I would also love to see more of an exploration of Lane's relationship with religion. She doesn't like all the rules she grew up with, but I couldn't tell you if she believes in god for example. I loved seeing the friendship between Rory and Lane again though, especially their talk in the bookstore. And I know not everyone likes Zack but I think he's a good dude in this episode.
Hi Mareike,
DeleteHappy birthday for Thursday, I hope you have a lovely day. The podcast will be a nice present, I hope you get many more as well.
I don't really have any thoughts on your comment except that I totally agree with everything you said about Luke/Lorelai/Emily. Why doesnt Luke stand up for himself? The whole scene with Emily and Luke annoys me, apart from the Emily/Kirk interaction, which is great.
Thank you, Amy!
DeleteI agree with you about the Emily/Kirk scene. I'm not completely sure but is this the first time we see those two characters together? I can't remember an occasion that would have lead them together before.
We know they spoke on the phone as it is Kirk who tells Emily that Luke and Lorelai are tgether but no I don't think we have ever seen them together on screen before.
