I have a theory. Luke told Jess about Rory's situation believing that Jess might be able to help. Together, Luke and Jess devised the plan (around Jess's recently published book) that Jess would go see to Rory and try to help Rory (as well as, by extension, Lorelai and him). The reason Jess wanted to meet up after the initial driveway scene is that he'd intended to follow-up with her again before leaving town was specifically to encourage her to re-evaluate her choices and to encourage her to get back on track. (Did you notice how Jess was not surprised at all by Logan? I think Luke had filled him all the way in who and what Logan was in Rory's life.) So, yes! Jess!
