  1. First of all, I feel you on the dress pants thing...that sounded weird, whatever. I started my first job a few weeks ago and we have a dress code and, well, I'm not a fan of that. Sometimes I'll actually get jealous when I see someone wearing jeans. And sneakers. *sigh*...anyway!

You also nailed what made me uncomfortable about Luke's reaction to Lorelai meeting Chris. I like what you said about how we can't expect Luke to not make any mistakes because he's never had a relationship like this. My problem with this, as it often is, is that I'm not sure the show is intending to do that or that it's even aware that that was a weird beat in the story. After this episode I doubt that even more, because he handled this situation really maturely while still being in character. It makes a lot of sense that he would be mad at Lorelai for doing what she wants to do and ignoring his wishes, but then he pretty quickly recognizes that that might have been wrong and apologizes and realizes that it's good that Lorelai thinks differently. She might not always go about it in the right way (which is debatable in this episode, I think) but it's also good and important for Luke to have that other way of thinking as an input. I also like that them making up doesn't magically fix everything and Luke recognizes that he has to be alone and that Lorelai lets him be.

As for Rory' side of the episode:
This feels like really old-school Rory, excited about college and learning, smelling books and talking about benches. Anna could get annoying really quickly but she doesn't for me. I think the actress sells that excitement really well.

I hate Logan's prank. It's not funny. I would totally call him a buttfaced miscreant from now on ... if I weren't too lazy to type that.

I also agree with everything you said last week about Marty and I do not like him. But I do have to agree with him that Rory's naiveté is getting annoying. Marty and Logan are now, what? boys number 4 and 5 at least who are interested in Rory without her noticing. But seriously, Marty has no right to be pissed at Rory at the end of the night, if he doesn't make a move and tells her what he's feeling. Especially after he just established that she has no clue about these things.

Last but certainly not least: I am so excited about Paris and Doyle. They spar really well, but I wouldn't say there was ever any sexual tension there. But then when it happens, it makes total sense. I love how pragmatic they are about it, too, and bringing Paris' life coach back for this. All of this just worked really well.

  2. I disagree with Mareike: Logan's prank was totally worth it for 4 reasons:

    1) he and Colin punched each other. Dear God, please let them have connected a few times.
    2) Rory called him a buttfaced miscreant. I love it when the writers let her use her vocabulary in a righteous cause.
    3) Richard participating in a revenge prank!
    4) I actually think the original prank was funny -- I can understand why Rory's mad (because she's pretty shy), but the "theme" of the joke is that Rory is so amazingly lovable that men fight for her affections, as opposed to them insulting her. Perhaps this is a meta-commentary on the Dean/Jess fight of season 3?

It's also totally consistent with what we know of Logan's character so far: he's more interested in a good time than anything, he doesn't care about consequences, and he's totally dumbfounded that Rory doesn't see life the same way. Unlike with some other characters (Dean/Marty etc), the writers definitely have a strong sense of who Logan is.

If the writers had spent half as much effort on making Marty an actual character, then it might mean something when he walks away from Rory. As it is, I have no investment in him.

  3. Women of Questionable Morals:
I liked this a lot, but I have nothing profound so say about it. I can't wait to hear everyone's thoughts about the Lorelai/Chris/Luke situation though, I feel like this should be an interesting discussion again.
Ok, there's one thing got: Forget all the men, the most upsetting break up of the show for me is this one between Lorelai and Snow. It breaks my heart. I've always loved Lorelai's love for snow, so when it starts to ruin her day and she gets mad at it, it's making me really sad. And then it melts my heart when Luke reconciles them. He built her an ice rink! He's grumpy about things but he doesn't want her to be. I love that and it feels like a nice continuation of last episode and their different approaches to Luke's dark day and his dad's boat.

    1. I love this comment, particularly what you said about snow. I have chosen to see it like this: In season 1 Lorelai describes snow as 'her present', I like this idea and it applies really well here because eventually everyone is given a bad present. It makes me sad too when it starts to ruin her day (athuogh I think a few too many things go wrong for it to be totally believable). Like you I love it when Luke reconciles them and when he says he knows he is grumpy but doesnt want her to be, so perfect.

I think it is interesting that you mention the Lorelai/Chris/Luke situation, to me the more interesting part is Rory/Chris and the 'love triangle' stuff between Lorelai/Chris/Luke felt really shoehorned in because that is clearly where they are wanting the story to end up. I am really looking forward to hearing other peoples thoughts on this.
