  1. I really liked Sookie's freakout worrying about being a mother -- it fit well with the freakout she had the night before her wedding, and Melissa McCarthy acted the hell out of it.

But....the "kid food" argument made no sense. I get that Sookie is a very serious chef and in her own little world half the time, but she really didn't know what to make for a kid's birthday party? Even after Lorelai told her what to make? The client didn't tell her what to make? The birthday boy didn't have his own preference for his birthday cake? The argument with Lorelai made Sookie seem like she was being deliberately obtuse as opposed to flaky.

Now, if Lorelai were planning a party with Emily, I fully believe that Emily would make what SHE thought was appropriate, client preferences be damned, and Emily would passive-aggressively reject all of Lorelai's advice. The cake would be scented with "guilt and Chanel number 5." You've got two characters bulldozing their way through other people's stuff in this episode based on "I know what's best." Crudite platter=surround sound entertainment center.

Actually, make that THREE characters, because we've got Paris Paris-ing her way through Rory's social life. Can we get a scene of Paris interacting with Emily?

And yay Rory! She doesn't hide in her room, she participates in the ridiculousness of college life! And rescues a (naked) classmate! I like Rory best when she's actually doing kind things, as opposed to when the other characters just talk about how nice she is. Now that she's away from home I'm looking forward to seeing her grow and evolve.

  2. Yay, you guys are back! I've been busy getting ready to move, but I'm all caught up now with the podcast and episodes. I didn't really like the first episode of season 4, but I did like the last two.

The Hobbit, the Sofa and Digger Stiles

Is the title suppose to be like, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe but with references from this episode or what is it suppose to be a play on? I remember not liking Jason the first time around, and so far, I still don't. I think it's his arrogance. I do like getting more Richard and Emily though.

I like that Paris wants to fit in a get the full college experience and make friends. I feel a bit cheated that they brought Madeline and Louise in for a scene and we don't get to see them with Paris. Are we suppose to feel like Rory has a better connection to them? Or what's really the point of bringing them in for one scene? Did we really need the update with them? Also we finally acknowledged the 4th roommate but still haven't seen her. I wonder if they were having trouble casting an actress.

Poor Sookie. I like getting more of how she's feeling about being a mother. Jackson is expressing his feelings by preparing for everything. Sookie feels like she won't know how to deal with the kids. I like that Lorelai tries to reassure her. I always love when we get these best friend moments from either Lorelai and Sookie or Rory and Lane. Still waiting for the latter.

  3. Well, this is not one of my favourite episodes. On that note, I think a "favourite episode" for me on this show is just one where I'm always happy when my rewatch reaches it. It has to be enjoyable throughout with a few "highlight" scenes that stand out and nothing that really bothers/annoyes/angers/whatevers me. They may not be objectively the best episodes and a lot of those are the big ones (Max proposes, Lorelai/Rory graduates, Rory moving out, the dance marathon etc.) probably because they are very memorable. For example, I liked Dead Uncles and Vegetables a lot, but I couldn't tell you half of what happened in that episode, I remember the dead uncle, but the vegetables not so much.

What I found most interesting in this episode was Paris, saying again and again that she wants this year to be different. Nobody at Yale knows her and she can have a fresh start. It continues nicely what you talked about last week with Paris apparently willing to change herself and her life.
What's a little weird in this storyline though is that it seems as if Rory has the final say on whether they open the door or not. But there are four people living there, shouldn't everyone get an equal vote and not just the one with the fancy furniture?

I liked Richard's unemployment storyline last season a lot but this here wasn't exciting to me. I don't care about Digger and I find myself agreeing with Emily's opinion of him. A grown man who simply wants to make his dad angry? Huh, now that reminds me of someone. Coincidentally, that's also one of my least favourite traits of Lorelai's. I hope this whole thing gets more interesting in the future now that the set-up is out of the way.

I also wasn't that into the Sookie stuff. Though I do like the scene where she's really freaking out and demands Lorelai get the baby out of her and Lorelai being a good friend to her is always nice to see. So this scene was good for what it was, but the whole thing comes out of nowhere. We've never seen or heard of Sookie not liking children and it seems to be resolved at the end so it's just here for this one episode. And on top of that, Sookie is just being a complete idiot about the food. Normally I would be annoyed with Lorelai butting in and taking over like that but she's totally justified here.

Did anyone else find Lorelai's brazilian bikini wax comment jarring? That seems like a weird thing to say to an 8 year old girl, no?
