  2. You're almost back! Hurray!
My biggest takeaway from this episode is how much I HATED the storyline that Luke got married on the cruise. Especially since he and Nicole immediately plan to get divorced. It seems like such a TV thing, and just throws yet another wrench into the will-they-won't-they.

I did empathize with Rory on her first night at college. I totally cried when my parents left me behind in the dorm.

  4. Hello again everyone! I enjoy how they’re easing us back into the season without dropping any huge changes on us yet while still looking forward to those coming changes. I especially like the last scene here, the nice quiet moment they spent together, thinking about the future.

I'm really annoyed with the forced conflict between Emily and Lorelai at Friday night dinner. There's this giant elephant in the room that I can't get over: Why doesn't Rory just explain the situation to Emily? That she wrote down the wrong date, it's necessary to do and buy all these things before she leaves tomorrow and Lorelai volunteerd to do it so Rory could go to dinner. Instead she just says Lorelai has to run some errands. Of course Emily is pissed with that excuse. And not even Lorelai explains it at the end. There have been some needless and convoluted conflicts before, but this one takes the cake.

Like Meags I also didn't really like Luke's story. From what we know about his and Nicole's character it seems rather unbelievable that it happened and it doesn't help that it's all offscreen. If they really go through with getting divorced immediately, then what is even the point of it? Because then it wouldn't even be a stumbling block in Lorelai and Luke's will they/won't they. It's just something that happens and is immediately reversed. I guess we'll see in future episodes if this has any consequences.

What accent is Greta the maid supposed to have?

I kinda want one of those creepy Taylor cardboard cutouts.

  5. Welcome back, Celeste and Cordia! Hope you both had a fun “summer backpacking through Europe,” so to speak.

The scene of Rory and Lorelai backpacking through town and discussing Luke’s cruise made me notice the confident ease of Alexis’ performance, and I don’t remember seeing that last season. It’s like she’s settling down into Rory more every year, which is just delightful.

There were a couple things that felt off, like Rory “flirting” with her socks for the audience’s benefit. That felt like a heavy-handed TV moment, and out of character for her to say just to herself. Also, Lorelai’s laughing fit had me feeling left out of the joke. Maybe if I too had been slaphappy, I would have joined in.

Divorce seems like the wrong re-entry point to the Luke and Nicole story. We don’t see them together so we have no idea if Luke’s cavalier approach to the process is genuine. Even though Lorelai was shocked at the marriage news, there was no chance for her to be jealous before he revealed the divorce, too. The emotionless way Luke explains everything, it’s like the show is telling us not to care, which at this point is fine by me.

I did appreciate that the show acknowledged the crossroads of this episode: Rory is forced to rush off to Yale sooner than she planned, and Taylor is ready to guilt her for abandoning her post. We can’t stop Rory or the show from changing, and while the episode itself is light on drama and heavy on exposition, it has me looking forward to this season and where our girls might go next.
