I realized the other day that I have been commenting since the first episode, but I never told you my origin story. So for whatever it's worth: I don't really remember what the first episode I watched was. I do remember when they started airing season 7 on "primetime tv" here for the first time and watching that, so I might actually have started with season 7. I love how many women say they watched Gilmore Girls with their mother or daughter, but I also have to laugh, because my mother pretty much hates the show. For a long while, they were airing reruns in the afternoon and when I came home from school, I would always watch it on the living room tv just to annoy my mom. At some point, she would come in, realize what was on and complain about how they are just babbling and talking way too fast. Which, honestly, was not something I ever consciously realized before she pointed it out. It was just so much part of the show that it didn't seem weird or unnatural to me. It's also one of the few shows where I think the German dubbing holds up really well, even though I'm so used to the original version now. That is still somewhat suprising to me, especially because the show hinges so much on the dialogue and the delivery. By now, I have watched the show many many times. As I said last week, as soon as I finish the finale, I pretty much start over again, so it's basically on a constant loop. It really is comfort tv to me, so I come back to it more especially in stressful times. It's definitely among my top three favourite tv shows of all time.
ReplyDeleteWhat I most noticed on this rewatch were the throughlines of certain storylines, how the tension between Emily and Richard in season 4, for example, builds throughout the whole season, or on the contrary, how Lorelai doesn't really have a continious storyline for most of season 3. It also surprised me that they don't really drink that much coffee onscreen. I would have expected there to be more, given how much they talk about it and how famous the Gilmore girls are for their love of coffee. And of course my greatest accomplishment: the Mr Kim watch. I don't think I will ever forget now that he exists in 2x09 when Lane says she can't tell her parents about Henry because they would like him and ergo, she would not like him anymore, and from 2x10, The Bracebridge Dinner, on forward, he disappeared from this world, only to be alluded to once more, when Mrs Kim talks about her own wedding day when Lane gets married.
Both of you, as well as Michael and Jen two episodes ago, said so many great things about this podcast and summed it up so perfectly, that I don't have much to add. I seems crazy that it's been over 4 years since you started this. So much has changed in that time, but I can honestly say that I looked forward to the new episode every time. And I'm going to miss it. It has been great and fun and insightful and thanks to both of you for all the work you put into this.
Our little corner of the world would not have been the same without you, Mareike. Thank you for being such a great part of building this community! I'm sorry we always sucked at pronouncing your name. You were a great sport!
