  1. The set-up of the double date is cringe-worthy. Lorelai pushing the idea is pretty silly: of course Dean used to hang out at your house...because he was a minor! But it's four years later now! And Dean even points out that it's weird! And of course it's a disaster. It's a sad state of affairs when Dean is handling an uncomfortable situation better than Luke is.

But Luke's anti-Dean rant is really interesting! He's looking far into the future in saying that Dean will ultimately hold Rory back.

But it didn't register until this rewatch that part of the rant -- "Dean got married while he was still hung up on Rory and he bailed out of his marriage without trying" -- applies to Luke as well, who married Nicole while still hung up on Lorelai and bailed out of it.

I wonder if Luke is supposed to be self-aware enough to see the parallels between him and Dean. And if he does, does that mean he also sees himself as someone who could potentially hold back Lorelai?

Speaking of men who are behaving more maturely than Luke is: kudos to Zach for being self-aware enough to know that he is a doofus, and brave enough to communicate that to Lane in a straightforward manner. You can tell she is utterly charmed by this.
